Why is redevelopment necessary?

Over the next 20 years there will be demand for almost three times the number of vessel storage facilities than are currently available at the Batemans Bay Marina.  Associated commercial and land based services will be needed to support new boat berths.

The existing marina was developed over 25 years ago and is in need of significant spending to maintain and replace facilities, especially the timber walkways that service existing berths.

In comparison to similar sized marinas, the Batemans Bay Marina has a limited range of services and does not comply with current operational and environmental management standards.   For example, berth and clearance space between marina fingers is well under size in reference to the current Australian Standards for marina design, and there is limited car parking and administration space.

Over recent years the NSW Department of Lands has consulted with a number of community groups, including the Batemans Bay Marina Co-operative, to understand what changes are needed to the Batemans Bay Marina. Changes identified are as follows:

  • Upgrade and increase the number of boat berths and moorings
  • Improve and provide dedicated boat refuelling and waste pump-out facilities to meet environmental standards
  • Provide significantly more on-site parking
  • Establish safe vehicle access to Beach Road from the marina
  • Develop more land-based services and activities associated with the marina to meet the needs of boat owners and marine businesses, local residents, tourists, visitors and community groups
  • Improve the safety of the marina by reconfiguring its layout to make it easier to move and navigate boats in and around the marina.

In response to these issues and pressure from the community the NSW Department of Lands decided to progress planning to:

  • Expand and redevelop the marina to increase service levels
  • Meet minimum compliance levels for operation and environmental performance
  • Increase the amenity of the site for boat owners and the wider non-boating community.
